Genova can be easily reached from the main European towns. The Department of Physics (DIFI) is in Via Dodecaneso 33, in the area of Valletta Puggia in the eastern part of Genoa.

By plane
The international airport of Genova Sestri, "Cristoforo Colombo," is centrally located at only 6 km from downtown. It maintains regular service to the main European cities, and direct air connections to Barcelona, Frankfurt, Geneva, London (LGW), Milan, Munich, Paris, and Zurich. There are shuttle buses to the station Brignole every half an hour (ticket can be bought in the bus for 2.5 Euro, it is advisable to buy a day ticket for 3 Euro which will allow you to take any bus, including the shuttle for the whole day). Follow then the instructions reported below under "By train". Otherwise you may take a taxi (approximatively 20 Euro).

By train
Daily fast trains connections to the European train network: to/from Milan for Switzerland/Austria/Germany; to/from Turin for North France/Paris; to/from Menton/Marseille; to/from Rome/Neaples and Pisa/Florence. Rapid connections are guaranteed by the TEE, EC and IC trains, and by connections with convenient times in all directions. The trains follow the routes of the major highways. The Ventimiglia-La Spezia line gathers travelers in western Italy, going to Turin via Savona- Genoa, Milan via Genova, Parma via La Spezia and joins the Tirrenica line for Rome, Naples and the South. ( Time table of the Italian railways). If possible get out in stazione Brignole (all trains stop there except those coming from Milano and moving on to Ventimiglia (French border). Otherwise get out in Stazione Principe and take a local train to Brignole (quite frequent). From either Stazione Principe or Stazione Brignole you may take bus 18 (towards the East, to you left hand side when you get out of either station). Stay on the bus until its final stop at the hospital of San Martino if it is number 18 and get out at the second stop of Via S. Martino if it is bus 18, which goes to the Pronto Soccorso di San Martino). In the first case move towards Corso Europa, cross it and look for a staircase to your right, take it and cross Via S. Martino, reaching the bus stop where you would get out of bus 18. Take salita Papigliano and then a pedestrian road uphill. When you reach Padre Semeria turn right and few meters away you will see an entrance on the left hand side leading to the university campus.



By bus
(Bus tickets can be bought at newspaper kiosks or tobacco shops for 1 Euro, in the night you may buy them from the bus driver for 1,50 Euro)
By bus from the West and the train stations: From either Stazione Principe or Stazione Brignole you may take bus 18 (towards the East, to you left hand side when you get out of either station). Stay on the bus until its final stop at the hospital of San Martino if it is number 18 and get out at the second stop of Via S. Martino if it is bus 18, which goes to the Pronto Soccorso di San Martino). In the first case move towards Corso Europa, cross it and look for a staircase to your right, take it and cross Via S. Martino, reaching the bus stop where you would get out of bus 18. Take salita Papigliano and then a pedestrian road uphill. When you reach Padre Semeria turn right and few meters away you will see an entrance on the left hand side leading to the university campus. At the station Brignole you may take also buses 17, 17 and 17\ (get out in front of bar Europeo and take the staircase to Via S. Martino and follow the previous instructions), or buses 45, 85, 86 or 87 (get out at the second bus stop of Via S. Martino and take Via Papigliano to the entrance of Via Padre Semeria).
By bus from the East: take bus 17 (leaving from Nervi), 17 or 17\ and get out in Corso Europa at the stop after the bar Europeo. Cross Corso Europa, look for the staicase to your right hand side, cross Via di S. Martino and take Via Papigliano, then the staircase leading uphill to Via padre Semeria. turn left and few meter after you will see the entrance to the campus on the other side of the hill.



By ferryboat
The port of Genova is one of the most important Mediterranean and transatlantic maritime headquarters for passengers and merchandise. Ships arrive from ports in Europe, the Far East, the Americas, Africa and other continents. Frequent connections are guaranteed on national and Mediterranean routes, also for car ferries (Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica). Regular lines travel to the ports of La Spezia, Savona and Imperia. Smaller tourist ports allow docking of pleasure craft of every size, with optimum installations and services.

By car
Genova is connected with the main European highway network:
A7 for Milan/Switzerland/Venice/Austria/Germany;
A10 for Ventimiglia/Menton/Marseille;
A12 for Livorno/Rome/Naples.
If you come from West or from the North: get out of the highway at Genova Centro and take the Strada Sopraelevata. Follow it until the end and then follow the sea side along Corso Italia for 4 km. When you reach the the Stabilimento Nuovo Lido (shortly before the village of Boccadasse) turn left, move up Via..., cross Via Rosselli, move up via... cross via ... and enter Via Pisa to the left. The second road to the right is Via Flora which leads to Via Dodecaneso.
If you came from the East: get out of the highway in Genova Nervi and follow Corso Europa westwards until you reach the hospital of San Martino. Before entering Corso Gastaldi (the prosecution of Corso Europa) turn left in Via Montallegro and follow it till the end to Piazza Leonardo da Vinci. Turn left and move on for 700 m until the first traffic light. Turn left again and enter Via Pisa. The second road to the right is Via Flora which leads to Via Dodecaneso.



Accommodations
The University is a pleasant 10-minute walk from Hotel La Capannina on via Tito Speri, where a block of rooms will be reserved for all course participants (map below). Unfortunately, there is no arrangement for transport to the University.



Currency
The official currency in Italy is EURO (€). Foreign currencies can be converted to Euros at banks, which are usually open from Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 13.30 hours. Exchange of foreign money and travellers’ cheques is also possible in most hotels.

Weather
The weather in Genova is usually mild. The average temperature in September is around 59°-79° F or 15-26°C.

Electricity
Electricity in Italy is supplied at 220V - 50Hz AC.
